Weekly Travel Photo: Palm Beach, Waiheke Island, New Zealand

Travel photo blog post fraser island dingo

Palm Beach, Waiheke Island, New Zealand was my address for two years and a very good address it was too.

We bought our first house close to Palm Beach, lived on Waiheke for almost ten years and raised our three children there. Two of the Candy kids were even get to have “Waiheke Island” listed as their place of birth on their passports which is much more romantic and glamorous than my place of birth in Lutterworth in the UK.

And one of those pain killer free natural homebirths was my son Max who weighed in at 11lb 1oz (5kg). Ouch.

So I did my bit to make sure my children had a good start in life and many of our days as a new family were spent here at Palm Beach walking, building sand-castles and swimming. Once we even spent a few hours watching a Southern Right Whale basking just of the beach.

But even if I didn’t have a sentimental attachment to Palm Beach and Waiheke Island I’d still recommend you visit when you go to New Zealand. It’s a very special place. The kind of place where anyone would feel at home.

Annabel, I thought you were going to mention, Palm Beach, FL.
I am reading a memoir about a Scottish couple who moved to Key West, FL. I love Florida, and am ready to move there ASAP.
I think that’s our next move.

      Hi Sonia,

I’ve been to that Palm Beach too – it is way more upmarket :)

Wow, that sounds exciting. I like the idea of Florida too. Look forward to seeing where you go next!

  2. It looks gorgeous. I spend a day on Waiheke when last in Auckland and enjoyed it a lot. Next time you come to Sydney I must take you to Palm Beach here on the Northern Beaches, as a match for this Palm Beach. It’s a lovely spot too, and I can confirm to the muscularity and expertise of the life guards as they saved me from the savage seas over summer.

I thought I read ‘pain free natural birth’ and almost fainted… but then I saw it was painkiller free… I don’t believe any births are natural. The whole thing is completely unnatural!

      Hi Seana,

Oh that would be fun. It seems like there’s a Palm Beach everywhere. I might have to do a world tour of them all;)

Lol, I should probably add a hyphen to make that clearer. It was most definitely not free of pain. You’re right, giving birth certainly didn’t come naturally to me although I thought I was getting quite good at it third time round!
